Short-lived perennial in Southern California, 2-4 years. Branch structure tends to crack at ground level allowing moisture to enter the hollow stem cores and decay the plant.

Reproduces via seed with wild abandon in Southern California. Very persistent survivor; will grow and set seed at 1' high with nearly no water, or will grow to 10' high with large shady leaves if watered well. Can grow 8' or more a year if watered. Seeds are untroubled by pests so nearly all germinate. Plants ignored by local rabbits, squirrels, birds. Poisonous leaves and seeds; have caution with small children or goats.
