A tall mint-family perennial, usually growing 4–7 feet high, with a square, largely unbranched stem and broad, coarsely toothed leaves. Unlike several related hyssops, its leaves have little noticeable fragrance. Long terminal spikes bear numerous small greenish-yellow flowers that are especially attractive to bees.
