Blue Eyed Grass

Sisyrinchium montanum

Description

Blue Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium montanum) is a fast growing, drought tolerant member of the iris family; this wildflower should not be confused for a true grass despite its name! This grass-like plant boasts a six-petaled, violet flower, with a yellow “eye” at its center, which can be solitary or in small clusters on long stalks. These violet blooms will grace your garden from spring to early summer. Naturally found on dry, exposed roadsides and in well drained, grassy meadows and will grow well in rock gardens, along pathways, or in the front of your garden bed. It attracts butterflies, flies, and bees. Its leaves and flowers are edible for humans and can be used in salads, soups, and stews.
