Goumi

Elaeagnus multiflora

Description

Goumi is a valuable and often underappreciated plant in the world of permaculture and sustainable gardening. Native to East Asia, this small to medium-sized shrub is known for nitrogen-fixing abilities.

Goumi shrubs typically grow to about 6-10 feet in height and width. By mid to late summer, the plants bear small, red, and edible berries, which are speckled with silver dots. The berries have a tart-sweet flavor and are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. They can be eaten fresh, though they are somewhat astringent, and are more commonly used in jams, jellies, and wines. The berries are high in lycopene, an antioxidant that is beneficial for heart health and preventing certain types of cancer.

Goumi is hardy, drought-resistant once established, and relatively low-maintenance, making it suitable for a wide range of climates and soil types, though it prefers well-drained soil. It is also known for being resistant to many pests and diseases that commonly affect fruiting shrubs.

In permaculture designs, goumi is often used as a companion plant, contributing to soil health through nitrogen fixation. It can be planted alongside fruit trees, in hedgerows, or as part of a food forest setup.
